FFL presented its first scholarship awards to three Commack
High School seniors at the Commack High School Awards
Ceremony on Friday, June 13, 2008.  The Friends for Life
Foundation's annual scholarship awards program is supported
by Dollars for Scholars, an organization based
in Commack, that matches funds raised by local groups to
encourage students to excel in academic achievement
and continue their education at a New York State-
subsidized university or college of their choice.
The  awards,  of $1,000 each,  were made to Matthew C. Lordahl, Max Daniels and Sadia Mehmood by Hillary Sweet, President of the Foundation, and Ellen Kurzrok, Chairperson of its Scholarship Committee. Sweet honored the students by saying, "I am very proud that the Friends for Life Foundation can recognize these outstanding students for their academic excellence and provide them with additional funds toward their college education."

The scholarships are awarded to high school seniors who meet the academic requirements of the Friends for Life Foundation Scholarship Awards Committee and whose families are affected by breast cancer. This scholarship fund was established in memory of Barbara Daniels,
a friend of Hillary Sweet, and wife of Jeff Daniels, VP of the Friends for Life Foundation, who died of a rare form of breast cancer in 2006. Sweet, a cancer survivor, found Daniels' " love of life and buoyant attitude so inspirational that she was motivated to help other women who are coping with this disease. The mission of the Friends for Life Foundation, a not-for-profit 501©(3) group based in Commack, is to provide friendship, support and inspiration to breast
cancer patients and their families in a warm and comforting home environment. "It is our goal," Sweet said, "to share our knowledge, experience and optimism with others who have been
diagnosed with breast cancer. We spread awareness throughout the community by inviting qualified guest speakers for dialogue, inquiry and interactive sessions that include, for example, yoga, exercise, nutrition, stress and pain management and other therapeutic services, all of which are offered free of charge to breast cancer patients."

There is also a Kids for Life group (ages 12 and up) for the children of families affected by breast cancer. The Commack School District offers community service credit to students who volunteer for this program.
